Festive Children's books!
'The Winter Solstice' - a wonderful look at the different traditions of the solstice from a variety of cultures. The author has good ideas for explaining the tilt of the earth in relation to the sun to children. The book finishes with a Cherokee creation tale.
'The Spring Equinox - celebrating the greening of the Earth' - stories from different cultures and traditions - also hands on activities for children.
'The Summer Solstice' by Ellen B. Jackson and Jan Davey Ellis - a great book for kids. A lot of detail about how different cultures and traditions marked the solstice. Also many hands on activities are suggested such as making sundials and even cooking with the heat of the sun.
'The Autumn Equinox - Celebrating the Harvest' by Ellen B. Jackson and Jan Davey Ellis. A wonderful book for children detailing how different cultures have celebrated harvest time and the different holidays and festivals of this time.
'Tod and the Clock Angel' - a charming story about Tod, a young boy who has nothing and nobody until he meets a clock angel on Christmas Eve. Beautiful illustrations.
'The Little Angel' by Jan Pancheri. On Christmas Eve a small angel realises an old man needs her help - slightly tear jerking as the angel sets off on her mission guided by a star.
A beautifully illustrated story with an underlying Christian theme. Jonathan Toomey has become cold and hard since the death of his wife and child until one day a widow and her son ask him to carve a nativity set for them and so starts the miracle... Suitable for children from about five years as there is quite a lot of text.
'Mog's Christmas' by Judith Kerr sees Mog amid festive chaos. A charming and humorous Christmas book, very gentle and suitable from an early age.
'Mog on Fox Night' by Judith Kerr. Here Mog encounters a family of foxes on a snowy night - her facial expressions are, as always, priceless!
A very humour filled story detailing the extra-ordinary lengths that father Christmas goes to in order to deliver a present to Harvey Schlumfenburger who lives at the top of the Roly Poly mountain! A great lesson in persistence.
Raymond Brigg's classic tale of the Snowman who comes to life and goes on an adventure with a small boy - lovely artwork.
Terry Deary's take on the festive season from the Horrible Histories collection - 'Horrible Christmas' - from disgusting things that people have eaten at Yule to dreadful jokes and some real history (find out the true origins of Rudolph for example!!) - for children from 7 and up.
Raymond Brigg's slightly irreverant view of this character - here Father Christmas is forever grumpy, living in a semi-detatched house in the North of England! Buy UK or Buy US
Dr. Seuss at his festive best - the mean and nasty Grinch learns that Christmas is not just about presents, decorations and food (watch out for 'roast beast').
The story of eight school children who rescue eight turkeys from Farmer Mack Nugget on Thanks-giving Eve. Ages 4-8.
One for adults looking to create great food - 'Vegetarian Christmas' by Rose Elliot. Not exclusively vegan but there is a plethora of vegan delights included and most of the lacto-ovo recipes are easily 'veganisable'. Our favourite Christmas dinner of Chestnut and Red wine pate en croute is one of many included here along with lots of advice on taking the work out of Christmas catering. This book is full of ideas for lots of special touches which can be prepared early and frozen - a firm favourite with lots to please everyone.
